The Body Sets the Pace

The Body Sets the Pace

Twelve weeks out. No setback, no scary moment, just a knee that's honest with me every day. The swelling sits there, stubborn. It doesn't spike unless I do heavy squatting, but it never fully leaves either. And there's a bone bruise, a big one, that keeps nagging.

Here's the part nobody warns you about. Sometimes your mind is ready for the next step, and your knee isn't. Even when it doesn't hurt. Especially when it doesn't hurt, because that's when it's easiest to talk yourself into pushing. But no pain doesn't mean ready. It means look closer. So I'm taking a good, honest look, giving my body more time, and trusting that rest is part of the work, not a pause from it.

Something else has shifted too. For a while, my whole life revolved around this knee. Appointments, rehab, ice, repeat. But Mochi was always there. My family was always there. Adulting was always waiting on me. I'm not adding them back in. I'm just widening my focus to include them instead of letting one joint take up the whole frame.

That wider view includes the rest of my health, too. I've dealt with anemia, and something that was helping me stopped being the answer. I took it away, so now I'm going the natural route: paying close attention to where I am in my cycle and eating for each phase so I'm not losing more than I'm taking in. That's the holistic side of this, and it matters just as much as anything I do in the training room. It's also a reminder of something bigger. Women athletes deserve research and metrics built for our bodies, because we're still too often left to figure this out ourselves.

I'm in a good place mentally, honestly. I know where I want to be, and I'm not putting expectations on anything except showing up every single day. Outside health stress can creep in and make that harder, so part of the work is making room for all of it.

It's always going to be hard. I didn't get here because things were easy. I got here because things were hard and I found a way through. This time the way through just looks different, because the main thing I have to do is wait.

And waiting is still work.
